Exfoliation

Exfoliation

DID YOU KNOW?

The process whereby the skin naturally gets rid of dead skin cells takes around 28 days, but slows down with age. Exfoliation is one of the most overlooked steps in the majority of clients’ regimen. Dead skin cells build up, leaving the skin with a dull, lifeless and with a course appearance. Excessive dead skin cell build-up can often contribute to the appearance of wrinkles, fine lines, uneven skin tone, sun damage and acne, while active ingredients of serums and creams cannot penetrate effectively, leaving the skin dehydrated.

Exfoliation 1-2 times per week is therefore crucial in any age group’s skin care regimen and leaves the skin smooth while stimulating blood circulation for overall radiance. .

Unless otherwise recommended by your skin care professional, one should exfoliate 2-3 times a week.

EXFOLIATORS ARE GENERALLY CLASSIFIED AS FOLLOWS – CAN YOU IDENTIFY YOURS?

  • Mechanical exfoliation – this type of exfoliator contains granules such as grapeseeds, fine apricot kernels or walnut shell powder beads that physically remove superficial dead skin cells as you apply it to the skin. They are ideal for courser or younger skin types.
  • Enzymatic exfoliation – this type of exfoliator is usually smooth in texture without granules. They make use of enzymes, usually from papaya or pineapple, to very gently loosen superficial dead skin cells from each other. These are perfect for more sensitive skins, dry or mature skin types, and those struggling with problem skin as they are not abrasive.
  • Chemical exfoliation – these types of exfoliations or peelings are only mostly only available as part of a professional treatment in-salon. These make use of fruit acids that provide a deeper exfoliation as with those you use at home.

Here is an example of the perfect in-salon TheraVine treatment based on chemical exfoliation to consider as the season changes:
